Information for Our Writer Friends

Are you a Writer?

I am a writer – not only at heart but in my mindset also. I was listening to a speaker a while ago who said that if you want to be something, do everything you can to become that. Then if someone asks you what it is that you do, you can say I am a ____________________. You can fill in the blank. It does not matter if you work at a coffee shop or a retail store – you are a writer. If writing (or any creative or business thing) is your passion, make it happen!

If you want to be a writer, do everything you can to get started. And more importantly, if someone asks you what you do, tell them you are a writer. Or artist, or illustrator, or copywriter, or, well, you get the idea. Your mindset is very important. If you don’t believe you are a writer – no one else will either.

Now there are sometimes I switch back and forth from writer to reader (a favorite pastime), but when someone asks – I tell them I am a writer. That is what I do and I do it every single day. However, my books, blogs, articles, and other contributions all are part of my writing. Although I make part of my living in the wine industry, I am a writer!

Writers’ Espresso has group meetings every month to encourage writers to be just that – WRITERS! It is not easy to get that started if you have been out of it for a while. It is kind of like sitting in a chair for a great length of time. You go to stand up and you feel stiff.

But, just as you do a little stretching to ease your muscles back into motion, you must do the same with your writing. It might take a little time to get it going, but don’t give up. Those writing muscles will grow as you perceiver. Find something you are passionate about. Start with that. It won’t surprise you that it is much easier to write about something you feel strongly about than it is something you think you should be writing about.

Remember, you are not what you happen to be doing at the moment. You are the summation of all your decisions! So make a decision to be what you want to be. Then formulate a plan to accomplish that and make a living at it! At Writers’ Espresso, we want to help you get going.
